Ah, spring. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the days are getting longer. Moderate temperatures mean you can trade your puffy coats for Hawaiian shirts and silly costumes. Nothing feels more joyous and carefree than cruising around Big Mountain with good company on a bluebird day in March or early April.
In other words: It's a great time to visit Whitefish Mountain Resort! Here are just a few of the many ways you can enjoy spring on the mountain and around town.
1. Après-ski in the sunshine!
It's patio season, and breaking for lunch al fresco or hanging out with friends after a full day on the slopes has never been better. Grab a drink and enjoy it on the Summit House deck while taking in spectacular views of the Northern Rockies, Glacier National Park and the Flathead Valley! When the lifts close, head down to the village and join the party at the Bierstube!
2. Check out mountain events!
At Whitefish Mountain Resort, the last few weeks of ski season always feature some fun-filled events. If you enjoy shredding the terrain parks, consider signing up for the Corn Cup Slopestyle or come out to watch the competitors throw down their best tricks! For something more low-key, check out the Spring Brewfest to sample beers from across the region and bites from local food trucks; all proceeds support the S.N.O.W. Bus!
And don't miss the annual Pond Skim, where dozens of brave competitors attempt to ski or ride across an icy pond. Some will jump and glide to victory; others will go out with a memorable splash. This is the most fun way to bid farewell to ski season!
3. Take a late-season lesson!
Spring offers perfect skiing and riding conditions for beginners, and it's never too late to learn some new skills that will give you a foundation for next winter! Our Ski & Ride School offers tailored lessons for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and skill levels, and our rental shops carry all the major equipment you need to get started on the slopes. To save even more, book your lessons and reserve your gear online ahead of your visit!
4. Go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing!
The Flathead Valley is full of snowy trails perfect for spring adventures. You can go snowshoeing in Glacier National Park or closer to town on the Whitefish Trail! The Glacier Nordic Club also maintains groomed cross-country skiing trails around the valley, including 15 miles of trail accessible from the Big Mountain Trailhead just below the resort.
5. Ride a fat bike!
Equipped with extra-wide tires for increased traction, fat bikes are a great way to extend your cycling season and explore snowy trails and forest roads! Fat bikes are as easy to ride as regular bikes, and they're available to rent at several outlets around Whitefish. Check out the Whitefish Trail or the Whitefish Bike Retreat and embark on a peaceful pedaling adventure!
6. Go for a stroll in downtown Whitefish!
Downtown Whitefish is home to many great shops and restaurants only a few miles down the road from Big Mountain! Whether you want a morning latte, a gourmet dinner, locally crafted beer and spirits, a boutique shopping experience or an evening at the community theater, Whitefish has everything you need to round out your spring skiing getaway.
7. Make it a multisport day!
If spring really has sprung, you might catch some Goldilocks weather that lets you enjoy several sports in one day! Spring in the Northern Rockies means the sun doesn't set until 8 p.m. so you have plenty of daylight for a round of golf, plenty of skiing laps and a leisurely hike or bike ride! Why not make the most of these long, sunshiny days?
