An update on Chair 2 and holiday operations

Update (Jan. 13, 2025): Chair 2 is now OPEN! Thank you for your patience.

Update (Jan. 8, 2025): We don't yet have a date set for the final load test to be conducted on Chair 2, but we expect to know this within the next day or two. We will continue to share updates as the commissioning process moves forward.

Update (Jan. 2, 2025): Our team has been working diligently alongside the lift manufacturer's engineer to complete the initial steps of the commissioning process. We are making good progress and, as of today's date, anticipate conducting load tests around the middle or end of next week and opening the lift to guests soon thereafter. This is our targeted timeline and remains subject to change, but we're committed to completing this project correctly and as quickly as possible. Please stay tuned for future updates. Thank you.

To our guests and passholders:

This past summer, the lift maintenance team at Whitefish Mountain Resort began a full modernization of Chair 2, the Swift Creek Express. The project is a major investment that will breathe new life into the lift, making it more reliable and speeding up future maintenance work.

Our lift mechanics have been devoted to this project for months, replacing and upgrading numerous internal systems and components. Completion of the project is within sight, and we're confident it will have a positive impact on guests' skiing experience for many years to come.

This project is actually quite complex and has been challenging for a number of reasons, including delayed parts shipments and scheduling difficulties. These challenges have shifted back the timeline of the project, which has now encroached into our ski season.

At this time, the modernization work is nearing completion, and the lift manufacturer has sent in its own engineers as well as a contractor to see it across the finish line. The final step is the commissioning process, which involves an exhaustive technical checklist as well as load testing.

We are doing everything in our power to get to that step. However, we do not anticipate Chair 2 will be open in time for Christmas. The complexity of this project, and the countless details involved, mean we cannot definitively predict an opening date.

We know the holidays are an incredibly busy time for you and everyone who visits Whitefish Mountain Resort. We humbly ask for your patience and understanding as we anticipate the following impacts during the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve:

  • Night skiing operations will commence as scheduled, every night from Dec. 26-31. As long as Chair 2 is unavailable, we will instead operate T-Bar 1 along with Chairs 3 and 6. This will result in a slight reduction in the number of accessible intermediate trails and may result in longer lift lines during night skiing, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Recognizing this, we will offer discounted rates on night skiing and swing shift lift tickets.

  • Santa's Gift Giveaway & Torchlight Parade, our annual Christmas Eve celebration, will take place at the Base Lodge and on Chipmunk, the slope under Chair 6. The location of our New Year's Eve Torchlight Parade & Fireworks is to be determined.

Please know you may see Chair 2 spinning as we wrap up this project, run tests and work toward commissioning. We will keep you updated and make an announcement when the lift is ready to transport skiers and riders.

We hope that by sharing this update we will earn some understanding from our loyal guests. This project is for you, and we will see it through to the end — hopefully sooner rather than later.

Thank you, as always, for choosing Whitefish Mountain Resort.
