Graduating to Summer

Congratulations to all of our recent graduates here in the Flathead Valley! You have marked an accomplishment none of us can claim—graduating during a pandemic—it may still seem a bit surreal now, but when we look back it will be a significant time in our history. We are all proud of you for hanging in there and wish you the best with a virtual high-five.

In a sense we are all graduating from a long and abnormal spring. We’ve passed the required courses: stay-at-home and Phase 1, and now hold diplomas and certifications in social distancing, 20-second-or-more-handwashing, handwashing often, and covering coughs and sneezes. Like recent graduates, we share the mixture of excitement and relief as well as apprehension about the future and the unknown. Yet still, it is a time of celebration—we open for summer June 13!

Up here at Whitefish Mountain Resort, we’re excited to celebrate Summer 2020 by bringing back all but one of the outdoor activities we are known for in the “non-ski season”. The one lone activity that will remain in hibernation is Spider Monkey Mountain. We know kids love it, and we gave it a lot of thought however, at this time we have not come up with a way to operate this activity and keep Spider Monkey Mountain properly sanitized frequently enough for our increased standards due to COVID-19. This is temporary, and spider monkeys can rest assured, we’ll bring it back as soon as we can.

The Strider Bike Park awaits young, budding mountain bikers. Just off the Base Lodge patio riders ages 2-6 can practice their balance and riding skills on pedal-less bikes while their adult units cheer them on from the patio. Summer Tubing is back where you and your kids can spin and slide down one of the two 300-foot side-by-side tracks. Kids have to be at least 34 inches tall for tubing.

My favorite way to kick off summer is riding an alpine slide. Now that we have two different slides to choose from, I have to go twice! When you come up to the slides this summer you are going to notice our cool new sled transfer system. We’ve graduated from the old roller conveyor system to a new, slick-looking “Pacline” that carries our sleds from the chairlift to the top of the slides like a gondola ride.

Speaking of gondolas, those are hanging on Chair 1 , along with chairs and bike carriers, to take us up to the summit via a Scenic Lift Ride. I expect it’s going to bring a few tears to my eyes to be back up there, gazing across the green valley and the snowy peaks of Glacier National Park. One also can enjoy some snow up close—from the valley it may look like the snow has melted however, there’s still quite a bit left. Dress appropriately and please, leave the skis and boards at home!

Hiking the Danny On from the top down is not an option quite yet. Hikers can start in the village and go up two miles before hitting the snow where we recommend turning back. Our lower mountain multi-use trails are clear of snow and can be accessed from the village, Lift Plaza or Base Lodge areas. Please be bear aware! Hike with others, make noise and carry bear spray.

The Whitefish Bike Park also opens this Saturday with two chairlifts—the Bad Rock Zone is fully open and all trails are in excellent shape. There will be trails open from the summit with some re-routes and closures due to snow. We also have a few mid-mountain closures as three new trails are being built. Get yourself pumped for the park with our Whitefish Bike Park playlist on Spotify. All songs are inspired by trail names, or rather, I should say the trails are inspired by the songs, either way check it out!

If you have yet to experience downhill mountain biking, we offer an intro package that includes a lesson, Bad Rock Zone ticket, downhill bike rental, and helmet and pads rental. We also offer bike lessons for others who want to improve, just call 406-862-1995 or book one online.

If you are not quite ready for thrill of downhill mountain biking, yet still looking for some high adventure then we’ve got a couple other activities you should try: the Aerial Adventure Park and Zip Line Tours. Both activities offer high thrill and excitement, yet do not require much in the way of skill. They do however, require reservations. Both activities can be booked online—new this summer!

In fact, all of our summer activities can be booked online! Go to, and choose the activity you are interested in doing. On our activity pages you also will find some of the new COVID-19 procedures specific to that activity. For more general information about our COVID-19 measures, please go to

Just a reminder, all Winter 2019/20 Passholders receive perks. Bring your pass and you can ride the Scenic Lift up and down all summer long. Flash the pass for discounts throughout the summer. Call us to book reservations for the Aerial Adventure Park or Zip Line Tour with your discounts at 406-862-2900 option 2.
