Night Riders Park Series # 1 - Best Trick

January 28, 2012 - Saturday

Series Overview -

The Night Rider's Park Series is a series of 3 terrain park freestyle events open to both skiers and snowboarders. This series offers a great experience for first time competitors, as well as the chance for our best skiers and riders in the area to throw down in the park.

These events occur on 3 consecutive Saturdays from late January to February, focusing on separate freestyle disciplines.

The series consists of a Best Trick Contest (Sat, Jan 28), a Rail Jam (Saturday, Feb 4), and a full Terrain Park Slopestyle Event (Saturday, February 11). Each night we will host an awards ceremony at Ed and Mully's in the Upper Village area just after the competition.

$1200 CASH PURSE for overall series winners of Pro/Open Class!

Tonight's Event -

The first night is a 'Best Trick Contest.' We will offer a choice of a couple of features of varying ability levels for skiers and snowboarders to hit for the competition. Either 2-3 runs (depending on time) will be judged based on overall impression of the amplitude, execution and difficulty of the tricks. This event is great for spectators as the venue is small and able to be seen without obstruction.

No license required - open to all competitors 8 years old and up.

All competitors must wear an approved helmet.

SCHEDULE / REGISTRATION ::

Winter Carnival Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Show and Rail Jam

February 4th, Saturday

Whitefish Mountain Resort's participation of Whitefish Winter Carnival continues this year with a Rail Jam, followed by a Torchlight Parade followed by a Fireworks Display of Montanan proportions. This is an event for the entire family, offering great viewing from the bottom of Ed's run, just outside of Ed & Mully's in the Upper Village.

Here is a summary of what is happening tonight -

The Rail Jam – This is the competition part of the event, it showcases skiers & snowboarders hitting the terrain park features as much as possible in a given amount of time. This means there is no break in the action between riders (shred city), making this format of event great for spectators. The Rail Jam has its own calendar listing for more details surrounding that part of the event.

Torchlight Parade:Skiers or snowboarders holding torches in each hand will ski down from the top of Chair 2 in a single file formation for this Montana Winter Tradition, making for great pictures and something special for the entire family. You can either be a spectator or participant in this great holiday event. Spectators can gather in Ed and Mully’s until the time of the torchlight (announcements will be made). Spectator viewing is best from the slope side of Ed & Mully’s. Interested in skiing or snowboarding in the Torchlight Parade? See below for registration

Fireworks Show – Just after the Torchlight Parade, about 7pm.

Saturday, February 4th.

Night Riders Park Series #2 - Rail Jam (with the Winter Carnival Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Show - see separate calendar listing for more info on the Torchlight and Fireworks)

Tonight's Event

This rail jam is extra special as it is our biggest event with the Whitefish Winter Carnival. We also have a torchlight parade, fireworks, a Dash for Cash, music, and a ton of fun. This rail jam attracts some of the best riders in the region, as well as some little groms in their first event.

The Rail Jam is the second Night Riders Event (Saturday, 2/4). Rail Jams are great as they allow skiers and snowboarders to hit the features as many times as they can in an allotted amount of time. This allows for constant action throughout the event and is a ton of fun to watch for participants and spectators.

-No license required - open to all competitors 8 years old and up.

-All competitors must wear an approved helmet.

4th Annual Dummy Derby
Demolition Day!

Details

Event Details:

4th Annual DUMMY DERBY

Saturday, March 3rd.

Imagine this...drinking beer from about a dozen breweries at the Whitefish Mountain Resort Brewfest held in the Upper Village, then just as things could not be better, you filter over to the venue of the DUMMY DERBY. There you watch homemade rafts (dummys on skis) crash after soaring over an enormous custom built jump.

See the video from last year's event.

Or, imagine this...Building a creative homemade raft (rules and specs below) with some buddies. Bring it up to the Dummy Derby, watch it get destroyed as it flies over an enormous jump, and possibly win $500!!!! Start building your dummy, it is free to enter!!!

Dummy Teams build dummies attached securely to skis or snowboards. Then send them down a groomed trough to launch off a jump into a crash pit!!! It's like NASCAR: drink beer and watch stuff crash! The only difference is the quality of redneck…and we are not saying which is better or worse!!!

Dummies must be brought to the upper village parking area (near Hellroaring Saloon) by 1pm the day of the event (You must park elsewhere after dropping off your dummy creation).

You may register your dummy there, where it must past inspection for the rules below. All dummies will be judged on their creativity and originality.

The jumping will begin at 4:30pm. (the event will be held on Lower Ed's Run). An awards ceremony will follow at the venue about 30 minutes after the last bit of destruction.

Contest Rules:
What you Can do:

  • Build a homemade Dummy / mannequin / humanoid / sculpture on skis or snowboards.
  • Each Dummy should be able to slide unassisted down a fall line course (the course will be on Lower Slalom)
  • The dummy must have clothes on and be family friendly.
  • Each entry must weigh under 225lbs, including skis and all. If snow conditions dictate, we may have to take your dummy apart and have you reassemble it at the top of the course.
  • Build your entry from safe materials. - no glass, nails, toxic materials...
  • The Dummy Team is required to clean up, haul away and dispose of their dummies and any debris, wreckage and remains afterward. A $50 clean up deposit will be collected at registration to ensure your help in cleaning this junk up!!!

What you can NOT do:

Dummy teams are encouraged to be as creative as they can. Rules are:

  • The Dummy can not be (or ever have been) live or breathing.
  • The Dummy can not weight more than 225 lbs.---skis and all
  • The Dummy must be securely mounted on skis or snowboard(s).
  • The Dummy may not have any glass or sharp metal objects.
  • The Dummy may not have any motorization or explosives.
  • The Dummy Team may not be more than 4 people (and no one will ride on the raft)

If you are not certain if your dummy idea meets these guidelines - call to make sure (862.2910)

Judging:
Half of the score is earned by most original design and the other half by how the dummies perform in the Downhill. A panel of judges will score Dummies on originality/creativity at 2pm. All criteria are totally subjective, and judges will be looking for winners in the following categories -

Dummy Awards:
Dummy Demo Derby Champions:

1st Place - Overall Score ( ½ originiality / creativity for your dummy, ½ jump distance)$500 CASH PRIZE to the overall winner!

Dummy Dude: Best Montana Themed Dummy

Dummy Delight: Sexiest Dummy (subject to harsh censorship)
Dummy Damage: Highest, Longest, Farthest Flight
Dummy Drunk: Best Beer themed Dummy. It is Brewfest today you know.
DummyTower: Tallest Dummy

REGISTRATION:

The event is limited to 50 participants. Registration will be located in the Event Office (the green building near Ed & Mullys in the upper village). Registration and drop off of your dummy runs from 12:00pm- 1:30pm the day of the event.

Participants under 18 yrs of age must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver. No exceptions. Please print the Registration and Liability Waiver posted here and bring it with you.

FEES:
Free to Enter!!!
$50 Refundable Deposit for Dummy Clean up. (Bring a check, it's easiest) Clean it up, and get your deposit back!

SCHEDULE:

12:00-1:30pm Registration and Dummy drop off at Event Office

Details

Event Details:

7thAnnual Corn Cup - Terrain Park Blowout

Saturday- Skiercross / Boardercross. - Saturday March 17th(on 'Goat Haunt')

Sunday - Slopestyle - Sunday March 18th(Fishbowl Terrain Park)

DESCRIPTION:

This is a two part event that makes up our biggest terrain park event of the winter, the Corn Cup. The event gets its name from the 'corn snow' that is so fun to ride at the end of every season, created by the multiple freeze thaw cycles that happen every spring. Register for one day or for both days, and both events are open to both skiers and snowboarders. This event attracts some of the best skiers and boarders, as well as folks just looking for a good time. Good prizes, good folks, good times, good snow.

Saturday's event is a Skiercross and Boardercross (competing separately). These events, now also in the winter olympics, race two to five competitors at a time race through a course consisting of jumps, banks, rollers and traffic. Top 2 advance to next round, each rider has at least 2 chances before being eliminated in this tournament style bracketing system. This = fun.

Sunday is a slopestyle event in the Terrain Park. Slopestyle events provide the best opportunity for skiers and snowboarders to throw down their best tricks on full runs through the Fishbowl Terrain Park, using as many jumps and rail features as possible. Competitors will be judged on their performance of different tricks. Each competitor will get two runs where judges will pick the top rider for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories, based on overall impression, style and difficulty.

UPDATED MARCH 21st 2012

For more info, including maps click here.

(due to recent change, map of boat section is not correct. see below for detailed info)

As we begin to look towards the changing seasons we are offering an event that caters to whatever your pleasure may be. This 3-leg multi sport relay race includes a Boating section, a Biking section and a Mountain section (which includes an uphill and downhill portion) - Hence the name Pole, Pedal, Paddle. This is an event that should become a staple Whitefish Mountain Resort spring event.

The event can be raced by individuals doing all 3 legs of the race, or with teams of 3 with one member completing one section each.

Specific details on each section, equipment needs, categories, logistics and maps are below.

SCHEDULE

Registration– 7:30am – 9am March 31, 2012 at Riverside Park (located by the Post Office on Baker Ave)

Race Start– 10am, at Riverside Park (where Baker ave crosses the Whitefish River)

Awards– Located on the Base Lodge Deck, about 30 minutes after the last racer finishes. Likely around 1pm - 2pm

Course Summary

NOTE - ‘the water section of the course could change due to snow levels, and the river cleanup project’. Any changes will be posted here. This course has been confirmed as of March 21 2012.

Paddle – 2.0 miles –From Riverside Park, Paddle downstream to the River Culverts (under Spokane Ave), turn around the buoy and head upstream to the river cleanup obstruction located by the Foot Bridge at Riverside Park. Turn back downstream to the start. This lap must be done twice. Total of approx 2 miles.

Transition- Boat to Bike - Located at the Kiddie Park (Baker Ave and the River).

Bike -8 miles / 1500’ vertical-From Riverside Park to the Base Lodge of Whitefish Mountain Resort.

From Riverside Park take the new Bike Path all the way to Big Mountain Road (not over the viaduct, but along the river along the bikepath). Obey normal traffic and pedestrian laws when encountering other people AND road crossings. Once you have turned on to the mountain road and climbed almost to the village area, turn right on Glades Drive which leads directly to the Baselodge. Transition point will be in the Base Lodge Parking area, lookers right of the lodge.

Transition from Bike to Ski Located in the Base Lodge parking lot at the bottom of Glades Drive (near the bottom of Chair 6).

Mountain Section – 3.4 miles / 2200’ vertical -From the Base Lodge to the Summit, and skiing back down to the Base Lodge.

Uphill- Actual Route will be up Chipmunk (below Ch 6) and up the skiers right of Toni Matt to the summit (same route as the approved uphill traffic path).

Downhill– Course will be marked with race gates. From the summit transition, take Inspiration to Big Face. Follow the Ch 5 Lift Line to Heep Steep to Larch to Corkscrew to Inspiration to the Base Lodge. Finish Line will be just outside the Base Lodge Deck. Please obey all Skier Codes and Statutes.

Rules

Rules for All Sections-

  • All racers must sign a waiver and be fully prepared for inclement conditions.
  • All participants must register at the start location (Riverside Park)
  • All racers must be at least 16 years of age, and must sign a waiver or have a parent sign a waiver if under 18.
  • Helmets are required for all participants, on the bike section and mountain sections of the race.
  • Racers must physically tag team member in order to begin the next section.

Paddle Rules

  • Any self propelled water craft is acceptable. Kayaks, Canoes, Sea Kayaks, Stand Up Paddle Boards, or even Paddle Boats are all allowed (but all are racing in same category).
  • All participants must transport boats to the start location and be fully registered by 9am. All boaters must have an approved PFD.
  • One person per boat only.

Bike Rules

  • Any bike in good condition is allowed. Helmet required.
  • Flashing Lights are highly recommended. Please stay on the bike path, use normal road rules (i.e. yielding to traffic and pedestrians). There will be no traffic or crossing guards, so use caution.

Mountain Rules-

  • all 'normal' equipment is allowed (no shovels, sleds, etc), must have edges and in good repair. (Alpine, Telemark, Splitboard / Snowboard, AT, Nordic, even Snow Shoes).
  • Everyone must obey the Skiers Code. Ski safe, yield to others, and normal mountain etiquette applies. Please ask if unfamiliar. Course will be marked and racers must stay within the course.

Access Information/Transition Logistics

This includes where, when and what to bring for each leg of the race.

This race is 14 miles long and requires multiple types of equipment. It would be hard to paddle the river carrying your bike and skis, or to bike carrying your skis. With that in mind, let’s work out the details as to how to get this done.

INDIVIDUALS– Individuals require more planning than teams. The Events Crew will be available to help move your skis to the Base Lodge for the Mountain Section. We will also be on site at the Base Lodge with a secure storage area for your bike. Individual racers do need to be responsible for the security of their boats at Baker Ave Park. Individuals should be at the start no later than 8:30am to accommodate these moves. Individual racers should arrange for transportation back to town or take the SNOW bus.

TEAMS– Teams are required to be their own support staff. If one person is doing each section, they are responsible for their gear and proper storage. We suggest dropping a vehicle at the start location so that the boater can load their boat and meet the biker and skier at the Base Lodge for security and transportation.

Boating Section-

Meet at registration to check in no later than 9AM. Registration and race start will be located at the start location.

Biking Section– Team Members - Please meet no later than 9:30AM at the start location. Course workers will be there to keep bikes secure.

Mountain Section

Team Members - Please meet on the Base Lodge Deck no later than 10:30am.

Skimming will be an individual competition based on longest skim ($1000 for first place). Participants will advance to the next round after each successful skim. Each subsequent round will be started lower down the slope, making it more difficult to cross the pond with less speed...and you have to go over a jump in the later rounds. We go till the last skimmer is a winner!

This event always sells out for competitors, and we have had upwards of 2000 spectators. Come and end the season with the best end of season throw down around!!!
