Nestled at the foot of Big Mountain and next to Whitefish Lake, the town of Whitefish was founded as a frontier logging and trapping outpost and boomed when the Great Northern Railway brought its East-West route through in the early 1900s. The opening of the Going-to-the Sun Road in Glacier National Park in 1933 paved the way for increased summer tourism in the Flathead Valley. And in the '40s, a few local businessmen were inspired to build a ski resort of their own, opening Big Mountain Resort in 1947.
It's easy to get from various places in Whitefish to the ski resort with the free SNOW (Shuttle Network Of Whitefish) Bus. Downtown is only 8 miles from the slopes. Check out the PDF map and schedule.
