2nd Annual Dummy Derby

Posted by Jessica March 8th, 2010

This past weekend at the Fish was a happening one. If you weren’t here, man, you missed out. Saturday brought us gorgeous sunshine, spring skiing, the first Winter Brewfest and the Dummy Derby. What more could you ask for on a March day (yes, fresh powder, I know…).

The Derby had around 800 spectators hooting and hollering for the best crashes and distances. Josh set up a ‘applause-o-meter’ at the top of the Events building ranking the crowd favorites. There were 14 entrants competing for the $500 grand prize, plus other prizes like skis and helmets and the illustrious golden ski boot…

Results:
1st Overall: Jamaican Bobsled (Ragnar)
2nd Overall: Stewie Griffin (Jessica Bubar)
3rd Overall: Osama Bin Luge-In (Randy Bruckner)
Tallest: Kin Kong Kneivel (Jeff Soyland)
Distance: Jamaican Bobsled
Crash: Jamaican Bobsled
Applause: Jamaican Bobsled

Special Olympics Montana State Winter Games

Posted by Nick March 5th, 2010

This past week marked the 14th year we’ve been the host resort for the Special Olympics Winter Games in Montana.

For 14 years, it is safe to assume, we at the resort have benefited more than the athletes. Without question, and whether or not they mean to, they give more than they receive. Every year our Events Manager introduces the event as the one the department most looks forward to and every year I think he needs to get a new line about it and every year after the event I think to myself “self, he was right.” Here’s a short list of why:

The athletes are continually happy.
The volunteers are continually happy.
The coaches are continually happy.
The parents are continually happy (they’re also continually patient and amazing human beings).
The resort employees are continually happy.
If you so much as turn around when in the presence of these athletes, they look you in the eye, get your name from your name tag and thank you personally.

Here’s to Frabert

Posted by Jessica March 4th, 2010

If you’ve been around the Village on any given Wednesday night during the season, you’ve likely stumbled into the Bierstube for the Frabert clod-of-the-week award given out by Ski Patrol.

Frabert

Here's to Frabert, Who Skis So Fast...

For the uninitiated, Frabert is given to any employee, guest or random person who does the craziest/silliest/dumbest thing or plain just makes a fool of his/herself that week. The ‘winner’ chugs a oversized cauldron of beer, and then the crowd gets fed pitchers until the keg runs out. It’s the most fun you can have on a Wednesday night (well, except $1 wine at Grouse for ladies night is quite fun as well…)

Here’s this week’s winner, as told by T.K.:

Last night’s winner was our lift boss Syd Ryerson. Syd was giving a break at the top of Chair 2 this week, and was raking the unloading area. She unknowingly backed into the emergency stop gate and kept raking. After a few minutes, she noticed the chair had stopped, and so called down to the bottom to see what was going on. The guys at the bottom assumed something was going on at the top. So they called lift maintenance in and after brief troubleshooting they quickly figured out the stop gate had been tripped. And in Syd’s own words: “I must have hit it with my big a**.”

“Here’s to Frabert who skis so fast
He leaps over moguls
and falls on his a**.” Now DRINK!

Wounded Warriors take on Whitefish

Posted by Jessica February 22nd, 2010

At the beginning of February, five vets came to Whitefish as part of the Wounded Warriors Project. Wounded Warriors works with military personnel that were injured in the line of duty, providing programs and support, and increasing public awareness about our injured vets. I had the privilege of hanging out with this group of amazing people while they were here, and of course documented it. Thanks to part-time locals Steve and Christine Shea for helping to get Shane, Eddy, Ian, Pam and Raul a taste of Montana and Whitefish fun!
